Who is Roha Nadeem?
As one of only a few female sports presenters in Pakistan, Roha spends her working week connecting with audiences across the country. As well as hosting a prime-time live show on Pakistan’s state network, she produces content for CricWick, the country’s biggest digital sports platform.
“We call ourselves a ‘one sport nation’ because cricket is something that brings everybody together,” she explains. “Sport is such a unique, unifying force anywhere in the world.”
Despite this, both female players and sports journalists share challenges in Pakistan. In both the UK and her home country, Roha notes, it can prove difficult for female journalists to establish themselves in this field.
And in Pakistan, there are far fewer opportunities for women to even get started. “Often we’re pit against each other, as we are in other industries,” she adds.
Though Pakistan faces ongoing hurdles, she has seen the country’s youth promote a more open outlook on women’s role in sport. And while men’s cricket continues to receive bigger funding and viewership, fans are beginning to follow talented female players too.
At just 14 years old, Roha played international cricket herself as the youngest girl on her team. While this may not have launched an athletic career, it did shape her journey forwards.
“It taught me that I was not made to play,” she says. “Perseverance and determination are very important, but it also takes a lot of courage to say, ‘this isn't for me’.”
Encouraged to channel her passion for cricket into her talent for writing, she published her first article for a major publication at 16. “I thought, maybe I'm good at this, maybe I have a voice. And that's because my father encouraged me to explore that side of myself.”
Roha Nadeem (MA 2022). Studying at Cardiff
Having found her confidence, Roha continued to write articles alongside her academic studies and soon secured her first on-camera gig, just as digital media began to take off in Pakistan.
She was later awarded a Chevening Scholarship to pursue a master’s in Journalism, Media and Communications at Cardiff, which unfortunately coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and a sports shut-down.
While separated from her family overseas, it was during this period that Roha sadly lost her father. “It was the hardest, darkest time of my life,” she says. “I contemplated dropping out or going back home. But my mum told me, ‘He would have wanted you to carry on’, and this was a chance for me to make him proud.”
With her scholarship in hand, Roha felt a responsibility to do well in her studies, even during national lockdowns. She recalls her tutors’ support pulling her though: “It was a pleasure to come across such dedicated professors who went above and beyond. My supervisor was so understanding.”
She went on to finish her studies with a distinction, and credits her support system – including her husband, mum, and two sisters – with backing her goals all the way. Despite everything, she’s glad to have called the city home for a while.
“That Cardiff experience really shaped me as a person, not just academically but also emotionally, in terms of the strength you can gather in hard times”
Five years on, Roha has already established a flourishing career in Pakistan. Looking ahead to the future, she hopes to see more women taking similar roles to her own, as well as more senior, decision-making positions in the media.
“I don't want to see a room full of men deciding what women can and cannot do,” she says. “That's where the real change will come from, and I hope I can see it in my lifetime.”
To recognise her own change-making work as a rising voice in sports, Roha won a Cardiff University 30(ish) Alumni Award last year. While she was unable to collect this in person, she hopes to one day return to Cardiff, wander in beautiful Bute Park once more, and finally experience a traditional Welsh rugby match.
