Usamos How much..? y How many..? para preguntar sobre cantidades. How much se usa con uncountable nouns (no se pueden contar y nunca llevan plural, como el azúcar = sugar) y How many con countable nouns, (se pueden contar como las manzanas = apples) por ej.:
How much sugar is there?
How much butter do you need to make a cake?
How much exercise do you do?
How much water do you drink a day?

How many calories are there in a chocolate bar?
How many hours do you sleep?
How many potatoes are there?

Y puedo responder con una cantidad especifica: 'There are 4 potatoes.' o sin mencionar un numero, puedo decir:
A lot./ Quite a lot. / None (for countable and uncountable nouns)
A little./ Not much. (only for uncountable nouns)
A few. / Not many. (only for countable nouns)
