Ukraine is finally using its powerful, longer-range Western missiles to strike targets inside Russia after waiting over a year for permission, according to Business İnsider. According to calculations, 245 potential military targets within the range of ATACMS and Storm Shadow. This development is forcing Russia to step up attacks on Ukraine, particularly on its energy infrastructure, in response to new challenges from Kyiv.

Ukraine fired British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles at targets inside Russia for the first time. Ukraine fired a volley of at least 10 Storm Shadow missiles into Russia, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing Ukrainian and Western officials.

The Storm Shadow strikes come a day after Ukraine first fired US-made tactical ballistic missiles, known as ATACMS, at a military facility in Russia’s western Bryansk region. Kyiv acknowledged the strike but did not say what weapons were used.

The Russians have been able to attack Ukraine with impunity from the safety of their Russian bases, while the Ukrainians have been limited to attacking only those Russian positions located on Ukrainian soil – at least, so far as the missiles are concerned.

This significant handicap, moreover, has had a tangible impact on the course of the war, with Russian forces taking territory for the first time since Russian president Vladimir Putin launched his so-called “special military operation” against Ukraine in February 2022. The reason Washington is now rushing anti-personnel mines to the front is to prevent the Russians from making a major breakthrough of Ukraine’s defensive positions before Biden leaves office. The Ukrainians’ desperate need to disrupt Russia’s military assault by attacking key Russian installations within Russia can be seen from the speed with which Ukrainian forces launched their first ATACMS assault on Russia. The removal of the restrictions on weapons usage follows the introduction of North Korean troops in the war — a development that NATO has called a “significant escalation” — and comes at a critical moment in the grinding conflict, which just passed the 1,000-day mark. The Kremlin has warned the West against allowing Ukraine to use its missiles to strike Russian territory. After more than 1,000 days of bitter conflict, the hope that Ukraine, with effective Western support, can yet emerge victorious needs to be kept alive.

Recall, ATACMS and Storm Shadow are precision weapons capable of striking strategically important enemy targets. Storm Shadow, for example, has a range of 250 km and is equipped with a 450 kg warhead. Its special feature is "fire and forget" and the ability to penetrate protected military facilities.

It is designed to hit targets with increased accuracy, with all target details transmitted to the computer. The missile can fly at low altitude and has built-in stealth technology, making it difficult for enemy radars to detect. This is the first time that Russia has seen such advanced Western weapons deployed on its territory, making its air defense mission more challenging. The effectiveness of Storm Shadow and ATACMS puts hundreds of targets at risk, with an estimated 245 potential military targets within the range of ATACMS and Storm Shadow.
