Side Stepsバンド内では通称「VOS（ボス）」と呼ばれるこの曲、既出「Latin’07」や「Another Encounter」、「Broken Wave」と同じ、2007年3月17日吉祥寺シルバーエレファントでのライブ映像になります。オリジナル盤のVOS（Valkyrie of Sorrows）は自主制作盤「Against the Wave」収録、ライブではドラムソロ等のアレンジを若干変えながら、これまで幾度となく演奏してきました。この曲はギターとベースのユニゾンが多いため、最初のピアノソロ部分ではギター、ベースともに(それを聞かずに)一心不乱にチューニングしているのに注目です(笑。SSでは譜面上でソロパートによく「Battle」と書かれていることが多いのですが、テンポアップした（ように聞こえる）中間部にまさに各楽器のバトルがごとく、アドリブソロ回しが行われます。野暮を承知の上で曲の詳細を解説しますが、この曲ではメトリック・モジュレーションという手法が使われています。メトリック・モジュレーションとは元の楽曲のテンポを変えることなく、別のテンポへ切り替わったように聴かせる、あるいは前後のテンポに関連性を持たせた上でテンポ・チェンジすること。VOSでは曲の前半と後半はゆっくり、中間部がテンポアップしたように聞こえますが、中間部の2拍3連の音価が前後半の1拍の音価に等しくなっている…と思われます(恐らく…多分…笑)。2拍3連も自体もSSでは非常にポピュラーですが、一般的にはそれさえマニアック？なようにも思います。SSでは練習でクリックを鳴らして練習することが多く、それはいつも脳天に刺さる音かつバンド音量以上の大音量（でないと聞こえない）なのですが、この曲ではドラム府川氏がテンポの違うソング・クリックを2つ用意。それを手動で切り替え操作してテンポチェンジしながら曲を練習していた記憶があります。前半テンポA→中間部テンポB→後半テンポAとそれぞれ切り替える瞬間にいつもドラムがどうしても一瞬止まるのですが、その止まり具合も体が覚えてしまいました…さすがにライブ本番では止まることはありません。このようにトリッキーなのは演奏している本人達も同様でありまして、今回の伊東氏による映像編集では演奏者の手元だけでなく、時折みせるちょっとした表情もフォーカスされています。とても良い感じに仕上がっていますと思いますので、ぜひその点も注目してお楽しみください。


Within the band Side Steps, this song is commonly referred to as "VOS (Boss)." Like the previously released "Latin'07," "Another Encounter," and "Broken Wave," this is a live recording from the performance at Kichijoji Silver Elephant on March 17, 2007. The original version of VOS (Valkyrie of Sorrows) is included in the self-produced album "Against the Wave," and it has been performed numerous times live, with slight variations in arrangements such as the drum solo.
Due to the frequent unison between the guitar and bass, it's worth noting that during the initial piano solo section, both the guitar and bass are diligently tuning their instruments without listening to it :-). In SS, solo parts are often marked as "Battle" on the sheet music. In the seemingly faster-tempo middle section, there's an improvisational solo exchange that resembles a battle among the instruments.
Understanding it might be a bit tedious, I will explain the details of the song. This piece employs a technique called metric modulation. Metric modulation involves making it sound as if the tempo has changed without actually changing the original tempo or linking the tempos before and after the change. In VOS, the beginning and ending parts of the song are slow, and the middle part sounds as if the tempo has increased. This is achieved by making the two-beat triplet note value in the middle part equal to the one-beat note value of the preceding and following parts... presumably (probably... maybe... :-). Two-beat triplets are quite common in SS but might seem a bit niche to the general public.
In SS, we often practice with a click track, which is always piercingly loud to be heard over the band volume. For this song, drummer Mr. Furukawa prepared two different tempo click tracks. I remember him manually switching between them while practicing the tempo changes. When switching from Tempo A in the first part to Tempo B in the middle and back to Tempo A in the final part, the drums would inevitably pause for a moment. We became accustomed to this pause, although it never happens during live performances.
This trickiness applies to the performers as well. In this video edited by Mr. Ito, not only are the performers' hands highlighted, but also their occasional subtle facial expressions. The video is very well done, so please pay attention to these points and enjoy it.
