Do you think gentle parenting works? It’s been a popular trend for the past five or six years, where people avoid spanking, time-outs, or other forms of discipline and instead try to talk through issues with their kids. Is it effective?

As a parent of three kids—now 25, 22, and 10—I didn’t practice gentle parenting, nor was I raised that way. Growing up, I was quite afraid of my father. While we’re close now, that fear kept me from doing a lot of the reckless things I saw my friends doing. I knew the trouble I'd be in with both my parents wasn’t worth it. I don’t think any child should be hurt, but applying discipline—like taking away privileges or having serious conversations—can be effective.

I’m curious if you were raised with gentle parenting or if you’ve seen it work. Does calm communication really teach kids about consequences as they grow into adulthood? In some cases, it might work, depending on the kid and the parents. Not all kids are the same, even within the same family. What’s your take? Have you practiced gentle parenting and seen positive results? Or do you think this approach is ineffective and should be abandoned?
