Project managers play a pivotal role in planning, executing and managing projects to align with the strategic goals of an organization. It is an undisputable fact that an effective teamwork clubbed together with smart leadership is crucial to accomplish these goals. To put it in another way, leadership and teamwork are basically two sides of the same coin. Thus project management is not only about managing project, but also about managing people. The people domain primarily deals with the know-how of the skills required, the methods used and the organization’s need to empower its people. It has 42% weightage in the PMP exam and includes 14 tasks.

The success of any project is backed by a collaborative effort. This means, even though the project manager is the person in charge, he alone cannot complete a project. There is always a dedicated team that serves as the backbone of every organization and on whom the project manager is heavily reliant to get the job done. Without the team working together to achieve a common goal, no organization can prosper. A good project manager is one who develops and mentors his team to foster performance, thereby increasing the success rates of the projects undertaken by them. The team is kept engaged and motivated to deliver results on time and as per customer expectations. The project manager needs to have remarkable interpersonal skills, exceptional knack to handle stakeholders and sensible intuitions to understand the needs of the team so that he/she can put forth conscious efforts to find ways to fulfill them thereby keeping stakeholders satisfied.
The formation of a team is not a simple process. It takes time and effort to build up a team and get them to work to their full potential. The process in which the team members transition from being strangers to being harmoniously working together can be explained using Tuckman ladder. It is believed that a team which does not shatter, instead glues well and successfully makes it through the five stages of the Tuckman ladder will exhibit high productivity.
The beginning phase of the Tuckman ladder is forming where a team is being moulded. The team comes together and become acquainted with each other. Ground rules are set and there is a lot of uncertainity. The team members may show reluctance to open up in discussions and have vague idea about their roles and responsibilities. The project manager needs to help the team by clarifying their roles, describe how they can approach their tasks and also how they can work together to achieve the project goal.
The key stakeholders are identified in the project charter, which is considered as the birth certificate of a project. These key stakeholders and all the stakeholders identified throughout the project are recorded in the stakeholder register. There is a stakeholder engagement assessment matrix which categorizes stakeholders into unaware, resistant, neutral, supportive and leading based on their level of engagement. Stakeholder cube groups stakeholders depending on their power, interest and attitude. Salience model classifies stakeholders based on power, urgency and legitimacy. Based on directions of influence, the stakeholders may be classified into upward(senior management), downward(team), outward(customers) and sideward(peers). Based on the level of authority(power) and the level of concern(interest), the stakeholders may be grouped in a power interest grid.
