STORYLINE:

US troops in Baghdad shot dead one assailant and wounded three other men in central Baghdad on Friday after being threatened with hand grenades.

The men threw one hand grenade at the troops as they passed along 14th Ramadan Street in Central Baghdad.

One man was killed and three others wounded when the US troops returned fire.

The most seriously hurt man was taken to hospital.

The two other injured men were handcuffed and later taken away for questioning.
