Nervous system

The change in environment to which an organism responds is called stimuli. Multicellular animals including humans have specialized kind of cells i.e. Nerve cell to coordinate and control the activities of body. These nerve cells (neurons) are joined to each other and spread throughout the body to form the system called Nervous system.

Sensory receptors
Provides external or internal stimulus to nervous system, They are of five types:

1.Mechanoreceptors –detect mechanical stimuli like compression or stretching 2.Thermoreceptors –detect change in temperature3.Nociceptors –detect damage of tissue (called pain receptors)4.Electromagnetic receptors –detect light on the retina of the eye5.Chemorecetors –detect taste, smell and other stimuliNeuronA neuron or nerve cell is consist of three parts:1.Dendrites –receives nerve impulses from sensory receptors or other neuron2.Cell body–processes input from dendrites3.Axon–conducts impulses away from bodyNeurons are of three types on the basis of their role in propagation of nerve impulse

1)Sensory neuron –transmit nerve impulse from sensory organs to central nervous system

2)Motor neuron –transfer nerve impulse from central nervous system to effector organs of body

3)Relay neuron –create link between other neurons (intermediate neurons)

Nerves: they are kind of wires distributed all over the body.
They are of two types:

a. Cranial nerves
Connects all the parts in head directly to brain

b. Spinal nerves
Connects all the parts of body except head to the spinal cord

Human Nervous system: divided in two main parts
(1)Central nervous system (CNS)
Consist of brain and spinal cord
Brain is the control house of the body and divided into three major parts Forebrain, Midbrain & Hindbrain

(2)Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
All the nerves of body like cranial nerve, spinal nerve constitute PNS.

Reflex actions: These are automatic, sudden and rapid responses against stimulus which is not under control of our brain.
