Can simple vaginal complaints be Lichen Sclerosus? It could be possible as often there is a delay in a diagnosis because early findings are subtle.
What is Lichen Sclerosus(LS)? It is a skin disorder that commonly effects the clitoris, labia and anus. It can effect other skin surfaces. It is more common in prepubertal girls and post menopausal women, but it also happens in children and men. The causes can be: Overactive immune system, hormone imbalance or previous skin damage to the area.
Patients will complain of pain, itching, bleeding or cracks in the external vaginal area.
Early physical findings are non specific or normal in appearance. Therefore a delay in diagnosis is frequent. In general gynecological offices, estimates for LS involving the genitals in women is 1 in 30.

2020 National Journal of Women’s Health: Symptoms can happen for years, sometimes 5-15 years, before the diagnosis. If you have persistent complaints that go undiagnosed, make sure you find a doctor that evaluates it fully. LS is a progressive gynecological skin condition. Tenderness, itching, burning, bruising, sores, bleeding, tearing, and irritation, pain, wrinkles, white spots, and inflammation are some of the symptoms with Lichen Sclerosus.
The standard treatment is a steroid cream or anti-inflammatory agent. This can be used on a daily basis. Early diagnosis and treatment is key. But now there are Regenerative treatments that help with LS.
