Who is Pele?
Pele was born on 23 October 1940 in Três Corações, Brazil, to Dondinho and Celeste Nascimento. His father was a former footballer, but had to give up the game after breaking his leg. Pele, however, took up football and played for his first team, Bauru Atlético. A Libra man, Pele was nicknamed "Peli" by his friends, meaning "mischievous", and this nickname eventually changed to "Pele". When he wasn't playing football, Pelé worked as a shoe shiner to help his family. At the age of 11, he was discovered by Waldemar de Brito, one of the country's leading footballers, who took him to São Paulo and introduced him to the coaches at Santos. At the age of 16, he made a name for himself and was promoted to Santos' first team. Pele scored a goal in his first match against Corinthians and impressed with his performance. At just 17 years old, he was among the substitutes for the Brazilian national team at the 1958 World Cup held in Sweden. He attracted attention with his successful football during his time on the pitch and was included in the national team's starting eleven. Having experienced his first World Cup, Pele travelled to Chile with the national team in 1962 but was left out of the squad due to injury. At the 1966 World Cup in England, Pele faced tough play from Bulgarian and Portuguese defenders, but despite his injury, he did not lose his determination.
