Aretha Franklin History.

Aretha Franklin was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist. Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942, Franklin was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where she began singing in her father's church. She was heavily influenced by gospel music and R&B and began recording her own music in the late 1950s.

In 1967, Franklin signed with Atlantic Records and released her hit single "Respect," which became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout her career, Franklin had numerous hit songs, including "Chain of Fools," "Think," "Spanish Harlem," "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)," and "Freeway of Love." She also won 18 Grammy Awards and became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

In addition to her musical achievements, Franklin was known for her activism and support of the Civil Rights Movement. She performed at numerous benefits and fundraisers for the movement and was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. Franklin also sang at several presidential inaugurations, including those of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.

Franklin passed away in 2018 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest singers and cultural icons of all time.
