Thandiswa Mazwai has been a trailblazer in South African music for over two
decades, skillfully intertwining archival Xhosa samples with jazz, Afrobeat, and West African rhythms to craft a vibrant cultural tapestry. She began her career in 1996 with music groups Jack Knife and Bongo Maffin, one of the pioneering bands of the dance music genre Kwaito, a musical and cultural movement that originated in Soweto in the late 1980s celebrating the new freedom of post-Apartheid South Africa. She talked with Farima Kone Kito, a Burkinabe writer, researcher, and cultural producer, currently based in New York City, about her latest album "Sankofa" (a Ghanaian word meaning 'to go back and fetch what has been left behind'). Recorded in Soweto, Dakar, and New York City, the album was produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, Chris Bruce, Nduduzo Makhathini, and Thandiswa herself.
