In the early-to-mid-2000's, it was announced that Paramount Pictures had acquired the rights to develop a live-action feature film adaptation of Chris van Allsburg's children's fantasy novel The Widow's Broom, which tells the enchanting story of a lonely widow who finds herself in possession of an extraordinary broom after a witch falls into her garden. The project was set up at Nickelodeon Movies, with Ted Field's Radar Pictures producing. Van Allsburg was to adapt his own source material into the film's screenplay, while Rob Minkoff was initially hired to direct, no stranger to visual effects-heavy children's films as his prior credits included The Lion King, Stuart Little and its sequel, and The Haunted Mansion. For unknown reasons, Minkoff wouldn't stay attached to the film for very long, as he would eventually be replaced with D2: The Mighty Ducks and George of the Jungle helmer Sam Weisman, whose tenure wouldn't last so long either.
