As the situation for children in Gaza continues to deteriorate rapidly, UNICEF is pushing for safe, expanded access to deliver more emergency aid.

UNICEF continues to preposition supplies for delivery to Gaza but three major challenges are preventing sufficient aid from reaching children in urgent need, says UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram: safety, logistics and the restriction of commercial goods.

UNICEF teams need safe access to all areas of the Gaza Strip, including the north. Ongoing bombardment and major damage to roads make travel slower and less frequent; more trucks and fuel are needed.

Blackouts in telecommunications impede staff coordination and prevent people from learning how and where they can access available supplies. And humanitarian aid alone is not enough: restrictions on the import of commercial goods must be lifted to replenish stock sold in Gaza's marketplaces.

"We're doing our best every day to address these challenges and deliver this lifesaving aid," says Ingram. "But an immediate and long-lasting humanitarian ceasefire is what's needed now."
