The cave houses a natural stalagmite formation of ice, which is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in the Hindu religion.


The pilgrimage takes place during the months of July and August, and it begins with the arrival of the holy mace of Lord Shiva, called Chhari Mubarak, in Srinagar. The mace is then taken to the Amarnath cave, where it is kept for the duration of the pilgrimage.


The journey to the cave involves a trek through difficult terrain, with steep slopes, rocky paths, and unpredictable weather conditions. The pilgrimage is undertaken on foot or by ponies, and some devotees also use helicopters to reach the cave.


Once at the cave, devotees perform a puja (worship ceremony) and pay their respects to the ice lingam (stalagmite). The pilgrimage is considered complete after the darshan (viewing) of the ice lingam.


The Amarnath Yatra is a symbol of devotion, faith, and endurance for the devotees who undertake the journey. It is also an important event for the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir, with thousands of pilgrims and tourists visiting the region during the pilgrimage season.
