The meteoric rise of young Korean classical musicians at international competitions has coined the term “K-Classic” in describing this phenomenon. Pianist Son Yeol Eum was one of the pioneers of this movement after coming in second place at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in 2011. She remains an active performer, writer and columnist, while also taking on the role of artistic director of the annual “Music in Pyeongchang” festival that was launched to celebrate Pyeongchang’s hosting of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. In this edition of the Globalists, we sit down with pianist Son Yeol Eum to learn more about where her passion for music comes from and what young, aspiring Korean musicians must do to succeed on the international stage.

최근 세계적 콩쿠르에서 우승하는 한국인 연주자들이 많아지면서 ‘K-클래식’이 급부상한 가운데 지난 2011년 차이코프스키 국제 콩쿠르에서 2위를 차지한 이후 ‘K-클래식’을 대표하며 활발한 연주활동을 이어가고 있는 손열음 피아니스트를 만났다. 지난 10여 년 동안 특히 모차르트 피아노 협주곡 해석으로 세계적인 명성을 얻은 연주자인 손열음은 2018년 평창 올림픽 유치가 확정된 이후 매년 개최됐던 평창 대관령 음악제의 예술감독을 맡는가 하면, 방송 진행, 칼럼니스 등의 다양한 활동을 해온 바 있다.
