AHH, so close, yet still so far from getting a solid result at a big national level gravel race. I thought I was well prepared, looking at wind, weather, course direction and presiding the decisive single track section, but unfortunately I overlooked a less technical but ultimately much more decisive section of uphill double track that blew the race apart.

I was well positioned for a few of the first accelerations, making the 10-20 man lead group split a few times, but the race came back together courtesy of a block headwind on a long flat section of road and tame gravel. The crucial left-right leading into double track at km 55 got me unfortunately - I mistakenly assumed that because of how easy the race was prior to this point, there wouldn't be massive separation yet. I was positioned about 20th wheel, and just made it on to the back of the lead group, but was not able to ride around dropping riders and still have the legs to stick in this group. I believe the only person to come from behind me to make it into this front group was Tom Danielson, but still, I know I should have been further up on the road to prevent the necessity to chase.

I chased, I blew up, I sat on, I blew up again, and finished 25th. Its good to see that fitness is coming around and I may actually be at a better level than I think I am at, but I still need to be able to put it all together on race day which has not happened yet. Onto the next one to try again!
