STORYLINE:
Ships and naval aircraft from China and 14 other nations took part in an unprecedented naval display in the East China Sea, the first-ever hosted by the People's Liberation Army Navy in honour of its 60th anniversary.
Chinese President Hu Jintao, onboard the Chinese Navy destroyer Shijiazhuang presided over the international naval review in the northern port of Qingdao that highlights Beijing's ambitions of becoming a major sea power.
Two Chinese 'Long March' nuclear submarines took part in the parade on Thursday, the first known public display of the potent naval weapons.
The parade also showcased 25 naval vessels and 31 aircraft of the PLA army, which included five missile destroyers, six frigates, and squadrons of fighter bomber aircraft and anti-submarine helicopters.
The gathering is being portrayed by state media as a signal of China's intent to develop its navy into a force able to conduct operations far from home ports in defence of the country's maritime trade.
Those plans are believed to include the addition of one or more aircraft carriers to the fleet over the coming years, possibly emboldening China in enforcing its territorial claims in the South China Sea and elsewhere.
Twenty one foreign vessels from 14 countries including the United States, Russia, Australia, India and Singapore also participated in the fleet parade.
Russia sent its Slava-class battle cruiser, the CG-011 Varyag, which carries 529 crew while U.S. forces were represented by the guided missile destroyer, the USS Fitzgerald from the 7th fleet.
Earlier in the day, Hu met with U.S. and other foreign naval commanders, telling them China supported increased cooperation between navies to safeguard maritime safety.
The president also repeated China's standard formula that China would never threaten other nations or seek regional hegemony.
