Located in the county of Kent, and around 30 miles southeast of central London, is the town of Tunbridge Wells.

The town is sometimes referred to as Royal Tunbridge Wells in recognition of its royal status bestowed upon it by King Edward VII in 1909 owing to its popularity among the royal family.

Its history stretches back over 400 years from when a natural spring welled up from the ground, hence the name literally means 'the wells near Tonbridge', in reference to the similarly named neighbouring town with an 'o' instead of 'u'!

Perhaps the most prominent street in Tunbridge Wells is The Pantiles, where the walk starts. This street was created in the early 17th century, but came into significance during The Restoration (i.e. after the civil war). Queen Catherine, consort to Charles II, is said to have recovered from a dangerous illness after drinking the waters here, thus boosting the area's popularity. A fire in 1687 destroyed the wooden buildings on either side of the street (a familiar story), leading to a series of Georgian buildings taking their place as part of the colonnade we see today.

Tunbridge Wells was voted 2nd poshest town in the UK according to a 2008 survey of 340 towns and boroughs. The poshest was Westminster in London.
