The Feather River Canyon in northern California has been one of the West's most dramatic stages for railroading ever since the Western Pacific completed its route through the rugged landscape in 1909. Growing up on the other side of the country in West Virginia, Scott Lothes "discovered" the canyon thanks to the gift of a Union Pacific calendar photograph from 1984. Years later, he began exploring and photographing the line himself, often in conjunction with trips to the Winterail show in Stockton, California, and more recently in Corvallis, Oregon. Even after being ravaged by the Dixie Fire in 2021, the canyon remains a compelling and challenging place for railroads and photographers alike. (Perhaps more compelling for photographers and more challenging for railroaders!) Between 2009 and 2025, Scott has made seven different visits. Join him as he shares some of his favorite photographs and the stories that go with them.
