The Mauritanian is based upon Mohamedou Ould Salahi's Gitmo memoir, Guantanamo Diary. The evidence against him was "heavy" due to CIA assessments based on "confessions" Salahi made. In the film, both prosecutor and defense attorney are finally made privy to secret files that contain proof that Salahi's confessions were obtained by torture. Here is a scene that depicts that torture.
