Today I want to talk to you about Reputation Management. If you've been in business for some time and deal with customers on a regular basis, you've probably established an online presence... whether thats through building an audience and customer base across social media, marketing directly through your website, or advertising online right? Maybe you're doing all three! Hey! Good for you!
If so, you also have probably also had to deal with negative reviews or even worse... fake reviews. I HATE FAKE REVIEWS! there is nothing more frustrating than watching your reputation get flushed down the toilet because some asshole decided to give you a one star review. And I say asshole because a fake review is left by someone you have never interacted with and certainly someone who was never a client. They don't realize the impact their review might have on your business.
It's actually a proven fact that your star rating on sites like Google My Business influence the behavior of consumers. Don't believe me? Well recent data will show you that: 82% of consumers will look at a businesses online reputation before making a decision. And, the average person will read at least ten reviews before establishing a sense of trust for that business. Customers who read reviews are also moments away from making their choice of whether or not to visit a business or make a purchase.
Also, a businesses star rating correlates with the amount of earned revenue and companies that maintain a 4 to 4.5 star rating on average actually earn 28% more in annual revenue! So, there is no denying the connection between your online reputation and how likely someone is to work with you.
Back to my point about fake reviews, often these show up as just a star rating with no written review and other times they can be both. Either way it is super frustrating and getting these removed as quickly as possible should be a top priority for your business because for most small businesses one or two negative reviews can significantly impact your overall rating.
Fake reviews are killing your business in more ways that you realize. Not only is the public's perception of your reputation in jeopardy, but Google itself may be less likely to show your business in the search results if you have a low star rating and especially if your star rating is much lower than your other local competitors. Reviews are the gateway to visibility in search!
So to combat negative and fake reviews, Google has recently launched a Review Management Tool to help small business owners flag and remove fake reviews. The tool is really meant for small businesses managing one or just a few local Google My Business pages. So if you are managing multiple listings or hundreds of listings like we do, this won't be an option for you.
Like most of Google's products I think this tool is a bit underwhelming and could use a lot of improvements but, hey, it's a step in the right direction.
