For a long term trip, volunteering in hostels can save you lots of money.

you meet new friends from around the world every day,
improve your self-confidence
immerse yourself in the local culture
you get free breakfast in most hostels (some experiences including meals and others not)

I'm working as a videomaker but you can find different volunteer positions worldwide like:
reception, checking guests in, helping with guest inquiries
changing the beds and some cleaning work
night shift, bartending and serving
help finish building, decorating work, gardening or painting murals
promoting and planning events, leading bar crawls and booze cruises
developing a website and creating content for social media

In this video, we were solo travelers who meet volunteering in a hostel in California. I hope this episode answers the question: is it fun to work at a hostel?
