Over the past three years, Long Island was hit with a multitude of powerful storms, including Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. State parks on the island were often forced to close due to damage and dangerous conditions, causing the number of annual visitors to decline.

George Gorman, New York State Parks deputy regional director, said the parks had nearly one million less visitors this summer than in 2012. Gorman attributes the decline to the unpredictable weather conditions.

However, Gorman said that Long Island is finally experiencing better weather conditions, and the attendance rates are on the rise. He noted that many of the state parts hope to continue this upward trend throughout the winter months.
