The role of a driller is to position drilling rigs to extract ore, liquid or gases from the deep below the earth and Nick from Kings College is keen to find out more about this interesting career with international opportunities. Boart Longyear is the biggest drilling company in the world and is found in 74 countries including New Zealand. Nick heads along to Boart Longyear NZ Ltd in Auckland to find out more about this exciting yet challenging industry.

Health and safety is a key element to drilling which does have its dangers. Nick is briefed and equipped then is off to a secret location where he learns an important fact about this job -- it carries on no matter what the weather! Rain doesn't stop the team as they conduct a confidential exploration drilling underground to a depth of some 450m.

Nick discovers physical strength is an advantage in handling the drilling equipment but also attention to detail is important to ensure the drilling progresses at exactly the right speed. At the end of the day, he admits the experience has been more intense than he's used to but the consensus is he's done a great job. If Nick chooses, he could qualify for a career in drilling while he works and as he gets further qualifications, his earning power would increase. He could also become one of the many New Zealand drillers who are held in high esteem globally.
