This quilt all started from that fun New York fabric. The colours are not my favourites, so it was difficult to settle on how to use the bright, graphic, novelty print in a quilt I would want to use and have in my house!

Since that initial fabric is so graphic and bold, I kept the other fabrics plain and solid (with just one exception!). Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids are my favourite solid fabrics, so I added some of those in colours that worked best with the New York fabric print.

Using solids is going to tone down the novelty print and I plan to strategically cut down the New York fabric so each cut has just one element (the taxi, an animal, one building, etc). I hope these two things will help create a cohesive and fun quilt top that is not too busy.

The one patterned fabric I included is a very small print that can be considered a 'blender fabric'. This is a small pattern that from far away appears solid and is easy to mix in with more graphic patterned fabrics.

The colours I chose highlight the best parts of the patterned fabric and work with the aspects of the patterned fabric that I don't like so much. Together they all create a fabric mix that is fun, that works with the main patterned New York fabric, and will work together well in a quilt top.
