Over forty days after the October election, New Zealand’s centre-right parties finally agreed on a new governing coalition on Friday that saw incoming prime minister Christopher Luxon forced to abandon key policies.

Luxon, 53, the former chief of Air New Zealand, agreed to drop plans to allow foreign buyers back into New Zealand’s overheated housing market and ditched a controversial policy to raise the retirement age to 67 to win the support of the smaller New Zealand First and ACT parties to form a government.
