Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to Create Your First Macro in Excel: Automate Tasks and Fix Data Sets.

Welcome to the MrExcel netcast, where we provide helpful tips and tricks for using Microsoft Excel. In this episode, we will be discussing how to create your first macro using the macro recorder. This is a great tool for beginners who are new to Excel and want to automate repetitive tasks.

Recently, one of our viewers, Rick, reached out to us on Facebook with a common question. He wanted to know where to find VBA and how to get started with it. The answer is simple - use the macro recorder. It is a built-in feature in Excel that allows you to record your actions and turn them into a macro.

To demonstrate the power of the macro recorder, we will be using a mocked-up data set that we encountered on the road. It was one of the worst data sets we have ever seen, with three physical rows for every logical record and even splitting up customer names between two cells. We won't name the software vendor responsible for this, but let's just say it rhymes with Schmoracle.

To fix this data set, we will record a macro called "FixOneRecord" and turn on the relative reference option. This ensures that the macro will work for any record, not just the specific rows we recorded it on. We then go through and fix one record, including moving the date, product, and quantity to the correct columns and using a formula to combine the customer name. We also show how to use the transpose function to rearrange data.

Once the macro is recorded, we can easily apply it to the rest of the data set by pressing Ctrl+A. This saves us a lot of time and effort compared to manually fixing each record. We also provide some tips, such as always turning on relative reference and testing the macro on a saved version of the file.

So, if you're new to Excel and want to learn how to create macros, this video is for you. We hope this tutorial has been helpful and we'll see you next time for more Excel tips and tricks. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more helpful content. Thanks for watching!

Rick asks how to get started with VBA. In Episode 873, I show a horribly formatted file that someone in my Power Excel audience has to deal with daily. A macro seems like a good way to deal with the file. I will show you how to turn on the macro recorder, turn on relative reference, and record your first macro.
