The Blues title hopes were dealt a blow after they lost 2-1 to the Gunners
BIRMINGHAM City manager Dave Parker admits his side will have a point to prove against Bristol Academy after Arsenal consigned them to back-to-back defeats in FA Women’s Super League 1.
Goals from Casey Stoney and Freda Ayisi proved to be too much for the Blues who grabbed a late consolation through Karen Carney’s penalty.
Despite the result, Parker was happy with the way his players had responded from their loss at leaders Chelsea who they trail by three points.
“I cannot fault these girls at all they gave 100 per cent on everything they did,” he said.
“We’ve been creating chances regularly although we had a little blip against Chelsea which we know the reasons for.
“We’ve come back and put in a better performance. We wanted a response and we got that, we created a lot of chances but didn’t hit the target as often as we should’ve done and that’s what gets you results.
“Box to box we were spot on. Yes we have lost and it’s disappointing but we will go again against Bristol and we have one big point to prove.”
Arsenal took the lead on 23 minutes when Shinobo Ohno’s corner was headed down by Leah Williamson to Stoney who fired home.
Jordan Nobbs almost doubled the lead before half-time with a 30-yard effort which was tipped over by Rebecca Spencer.
Birmingham thought they had a penalty on 49 minutes when Jade Moore was brought down but referee Amy Fern consulted with her assistant and changed her decision to a corner.
As the hosts pressed for an equaliser, Ayisi extended the lead before Carney struck in stoppage time after Alex Scott handballed in the box.
Arsenal have won three of their last four games and player-coach Kelly Smith believes they have finally hit top form.
“We scored two really good goals and it’s pleasing because we’ve had a really difficult season and, off the back of the break, I think we have hit full stride,” Smith said.
“We’ve played a team that are fighting for the title and won, it’s really pleasing for everyone involved.
“We will take this into our next game against Chelsea. We know a lot about them but it’s going to be another tough game.
“We want to finish has high as possible and obviously they are fighting for the title but we are going all out for the three points.”
