This video was recorded last July 24, 2024 at around 05:30 PM.
Walking from Clarke Quay MRT station to the Merlion at Marina Bay offers a scenic journey through some of Singapore's most iconic locations. Clarke Quay, a historical riverside quay within the Singapore River Planning Area, is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and diverse selection of restaurants and bars. From there, the walk along the Singapore River towards Boat Quay provides picturesque views of the river, old shophouses, and modern skyscrapers. Boat Quay, once the heart of Singapore's trading port in the 19th century, is now a bustling area for dining and nightlife, featuring many restaurants and bars in restored shophouses. Continuing along the river, you'll pass by the Asian Civilisations Museum, which showcases Asia's rich cultural heritage, and the grand neoclassical Fullerton Hotel, originally a post office and now a luxury hotel.
As you approach Marina Bay, you'll see the iconic Esplanade, known as "The Durian" due to its distinctive spiky domes, a major arts center hosting concerts, plays, and cultural events. Finally, you'll reach the Merlion Park, home to Singapore's famous Merlion statue. The Merlion, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, symbolizes Singapore, with the lion's head representing its original name, "Singapura," meaning "Lion City," and the fish body reflecting the city's origins as a fishing village. Clarke Quay, named after Sir Andrew Clarke, the second Governor of Singapore, played a significant role in the city's trade history and has been revitalized as a hub for entertainment and dining. The Singapore River, once a bustling center of trade and commerce, is now a scenic spot for leisure and recreation. In its past, Boat Quay was the busiest part of the old Port of Singapore, handling three-quarters of all shipping business in the late 19th century. The Asian Civilisations Museum emphasizes the diverse cultural heritage of Asia, particularly the ancestral cultures of Singaporeans. The Fullerton Hotel, completed in 1928, originally served as the General Post Office and was later transformed into a luxury hotel, retaining its historical architecture. The Merlion, designed as an emblem for the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964, stands 8.6 meters tall and weighs 70 tons, symbolizing Singapore's humble beginnings and transformation into a prosperous nation. The walk is approximately 2 to 3 kilometers long and can take around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace and stops along the way.
