Japanese emperor marks 82nd birthday

(23 Dec 2015) Japanese Emperor Akihito made a public appearance to mark his 82nd birthday in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were accompanied by close family members as they appeared on the balcony overlooking the courtyard of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
Despite the grey and cold morning around 13,000 people packed the courtyard to celebrate his birthday, and to take a look inside the palace which is normally closed to public.
The Emperor is scheduled to make two more public appearance to greet well-wishers on his birthday, which is a national holiday in Japan.
