Luz Long’s athletic ability wasn’t enough to protect him from military service to the fatherland. Just 7 years after the olympics, Luz would be killed in action in midst of world war 2.


He and Jessie Owens exchanged letters until sometime in the war when communication between the 2 became impossible.


Jessie however, would maintain a decades long friendship with Luz’s son, and the 2 even recreated the iconic photo together.


Jessie Owens, who was the champion and international star of these games, would leave Nazi Germany, and return to a life of far worse treatment, in America. His star faded out almost instantly, and he struggled to get work in a segregated country, eventually being forced to race against cars and horses to get by. “I had 4 gold medals, he would say decades laters, but you can’t eat 4 gold medals. What was I supposed to do. World war 2 would lead to the cancelling of the 1940, and 44 games, leaving jessie as a 1 time olympian.


Gretel Bergmann left Germany after the olympics for America, vowing to never return to her homeland. She would break that vow 70 years later, to visit an old friend.


Dora Ratjen would eventually break the womens high jump world record, before the secret was exposed, and all Dora’s athletic achievements were voided. He would change his name to Heinrich Ratjen, and live the rest of his life out managing a family restaurant, declining all requests for interview. Some allege that the Nazis forced him to act as a women to simply try and win more medals for Germany, however a confusing childhood paints a picture of a confused young boy, just scared to speak up.


Leni Reifenstahl’s film would do exactly what the Nazis wated, displaying the country as a major world power. But it would go far above and beyond that in it’s technical capacity, becoming a microcosm for the fascinating life of Leni herself. Attempting to separate art from artist becomes difficult, as she consistently revolutinzied cinema, but often doing so while on Nazi commission to knowingly create propaganda films. Her and Glenn Morris would not conitniue their love affair, as he went back to America. Decades later, both of them indivudally expressed their lifelong regret for not staying together. There is a romance novel based on their story.


Avery Brundage, for his efforts in helping the Nazi’s host, would gain that membership on the IOC that he would’ve done anything for. Eventually, he would work his way to president of the whole damn thing. However, future accounts of his actions surrounding these games, as well as his handling of other incidents decades later, would paint him as a racist, anti-Semitic, nazi sympathizer, with a shattered legacy.
