It would be easy to dismiss this as "just Euro nymphing with a tenkara rod" - which of course is not a dumb description given that he is fishing nymphs on a fixed line rod (actually a keiryu rod in this case, rather than a true tenkara rod). At the same time, this type of fishing is also what many folks think is exactly what "tenkara" is...when that misses the mark by a long way.

If you only take that surface-layer view, you have missed the details that can really help your success if you are a thinking angler with an open mind.

Shin Takahashi has a really strong base in Japanese tenkara tactics using level lines and unweighted Japanese fly patterns. He has also done a lot of research into successful Western competition fishing methods. When he fishes his "tenkara nymphing" approach, he combines aspects of both of those schools to create something that is somewhere in the middle.

His rods are much more sensitive than typical competition "nymphing" rods used in Euro-nymphing styles - and there is a lot more structure around the manipulation (or "active management" / "induced take") techniques within tenkara that you can apply to your nymphing.
