Tucked away in the resort town of Deep Creek, out near Maryland’s western border, lies what may very well be the state’s finest public golf course: Thousand Acres.

I first heard about it after finishing a tournament ranking Maryland’s best public tracks. A few subscribers reached out, asking if I’d played this new course that had quietly opened its doors. To my surprise, I hadn’t even heard of it—so I made the three-hour drive from D.C. to find out for myself. And it didn’t take more than a few holes to realize: this was the real deal. A legitimate contender for Maryland’s best public golf experience.
From the opening tee shot, Thousand Acres announces itself with scale and beauty. While it sits near Deep Creek Lake, the course feels more like a mountain golf retreat—grand, rugged, and dramatic. The name “Thousand Acres” couldn’t be more fitting. Each hole is carved through dense forest, yet never feels crowded. Instead, every fairway opens up like its own amphitheater, framed by endless views of tree-covered ridgelines rolling out to the horizon.

The routing is strong. Fairways are generous, but the hilly terrain can turn a slight miss into a lost ball with one unlucky bounce. The greens are large and inviting, with subtle slopes that keep you honest without ever feeling unfair. At over 7,200 yards from the tips, it’s a stout test, but playable from every set of tees. What I loved most were the elevated tee boxes—perfectly framed, with manicured corridors of pines giving way to wide, breathtaking vistas. I can only imagine how special this place must feel in the fall, when the mountain landscape turns into a sea of color.

What really impressed me, though, were the conditions. Thousand Acres might just be the best-conditioned course in the entire state. It opened nine holes several years ago, then completed the full 18 in 2023—and it still feels brand new. Greens rolled true, fairways were flawless, and every bunker looked hand-detailed. For a public-access course, the conditioning was remarkable.

In my mind, this is hands down the best course in Deep Creek, and I’d put it firmly in the conversation for Maryland’s top five publics. If you’re a golfer in Maryland, West Virginia, or Pennsylvania, this is a destination worth the trip. Thousand Acres is fun, challenging, scenic, and memorable—a modern course that already feels like it belongs on any serious golfer’s list.
