The Altun Mountains are a vast mountain range in the northern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. Stretching approximately 800 kilometers from the upper reaches of the Qiemo River in the west to the Dangjin Pass in the east, they connect with the Qilian Mountains and serve as the natural boundary between the Tarim Basin and the Qaidam Basin.

Dangjin Pass is a crucial mountain pass at the eastern end of the Altun Mountains, marking the geographical divide between the Altun Mountains and the Qilian Mountains. The area east of Dangjin Pass belongs to the Qilian Mountains, while the area west of it belongs to the Altun Mountains. At an elevation of about 3,648 meters, Dangjin Pass is a vital transportation hub linking Gansu, Qinghai, and Ruoqiang (Xinjiang). Crossing Dangjin Pass from Aksai County in Gansu Province leads to Mangya City in the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province. Dangjin Pass is an important land corridor connecting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Hexi Corridor.
