Juror Statement:
"These days, many of us have been preoccupied with signs of health. Of late, I have been searching for promising signs of health like a cat for a box to sit in. Thus, it may not be a surprise that as a curator, art critic, grants manager, I’m persistently seeking these signs of health in our creative communities, indications that these communities are still at work and will continue to thrive when this pandemic eventually subsides.
Jurying this exhibition has been one of the most encouraging signs of collective creative health I have encountered in a long time.
The opening receptions may have become rarer, the opportunities scantier, the chances to interact with other artists less frequent. Yet, considering the many pieces submitted for this exhibition this much is clear: though the artists of the Sarasota and surrounding art community may largely be working alone, they are working hard. This collective body of work is highly skilled; it is diverse in its makers, media, and subject matter. The artwork is prolific and created with a rigorous work ethic. So, as is to be expected, the selection process for “The Big Show” was a very difficult task. However, I would like to encourage all artists who submitted to continue your work especially in this moment. I also want to commend every artist who submitted work, each artist whose work will be presented in the exhibition and especially the awardees for your fine work and sharing your vision with us." - Danny Olda
