19 June 1949, Raj Kiran Mahtani was born in Bombay (now Mumbai). Born in a Sindhi family, Raj has two brothers, Govind Mahtani and Ajit Mahtani. He was fond of acting in films since childhood. During his college days, Raj Kiran got a role in B.R. Ishara's film Kaagaz Ki Naav (1975) at the age of 26. His heroine in this film was Sarika (Kamal Haasan's ex-wife and Shruti Haasan's mother). This was also his debut film.Due to his recent film Kaagaz Ki Naav, he got his next film, Kissa Kursi Ka. The 1977 social-political satire film was mired in a lot of controversies. Congress leaders Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi were made fun of in the film, due to which the ruling Congress party banned the film. After the imposition of emergency in the country, all the prints and master prints of this film were confiscated at the censor board office. Raj Kiran appeared in the film Shiksha. The year 1980 brought a golden period for Raj Kiran's career. This year, not one or two, but 8 of his films were released. Bambai Ka Maharaja, Maan Abhimaan, Manokamna, Nazarana Pyar Ka, Patita, Saajan Mere Main Saajan Ki and Ye Kaisa Insaaf, all these films were released in 1980 and most of them were hits. In the same year, Raj Kiran appeared in the film Karz along with Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Simi Grewal. Rishi Kapoor was seen in the role of Monty in Karz. Monty was the reincarnation of Raj Kiran. Raj Kiran got recognition across the country for the role of Karz. Even today, many people know Raj Kiran for the film Karz. Raj Kiran was seen with veteran actors like Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in the film Arth (semi-autobiographical based on the affair of Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi) released in 1982. The songs of this film, Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar…, Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho… are evergreen even today. This film proved to be a superhit by earning 2 crores rupees.
Raj Kiran was the only actor of his kind who started doing supporting roles along with lead roles in superhit films. He played supporting roles in many films like Film Star (1982), Mazdoor (1983), Ghar Ek Mandir (1983), Ghar Ho To Aisa (1990). In the mid-80s, Raj Kiran almost stopped getting lead roles. He was only given side roles in most films. At that time, in an interview given to Sunday Magazine, Raj Kiran had said, either I will do something great in films or I will leave. At the same time, he had also decided to leave films and complete his studies, but that could not happen.

With time, Raj Kiran's identity started fading away while doing side roles. Those who used to get the roles of handsome and soft-natured heroes in films earlier, were left with only the roles of hero's brother, friend or villain after the 80s. Raj Kiran started getting worried due to the failure in films. He started feeling bad about being a side hero from a hero, due to which he started living under mental stress. In the late 90s, a news published in the newspaper shocked everyone. T, but when he tried to enter the ashram illegally by jumping over the wall, he was caught. The guards of the same ashram handed him over to the police. In the year 1997, Raj Kiran appealed for help in an interview given to Cineblitz magazine. The title of that interview was, 'I need help to stay alive.'

When it became difficult to survive in America, Raj returned to India again. In an interview to Cineblitz, he said that he was very happy doing ordinary work in America. After this interview given in 1997, Raj Kiran started living in complete anonymity. No one from the film industry extended a helping hand to him, nor did they enquire about him. When there was no news of Raj Kiran for many days, some of his friends started making inquiries. These people included his co-stars Rishi Kapoor and Deepti Naval. After searching for many days, some people even believed that Raj Kiran was no longer alive, but those who were searching for him never gave up. After a few years, when Raj Kiran became completely anonymous, his co-star from Hip Hip Hurray, Prem Jaal and Ghar Ho To Aisa films, Deepti Naval, started looking for him through a Facebook post. She had written in the post, "I am looking for a friend from the film world."
