Описание к видео Blocked Cat! The cat that cant urinate/pee. Dr. Dan talks through all of it.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am going to talk about everything blocked cat wise.

What does it mean when a cat is “blocked”?

A blocked cat (also called a urinary obstruction) means urine cannot leave the bladder through the urethra (the tube that carries pee out of the body).

This happens most often in male cats because their urethra is long and narrow.

What causes the blockage?

Common causes include:

Urinary crystals or stones (tiny mineral shards)

Mucus plugs (thick debris in the urine)

Inflammation or swelling of the urethra

Stress-related bladder disease (very common in cats)

Rarely: tumors or scarring

Why is this so dangerous?

When urine can’t get out:

The bladder painfully stretches

Toxins build up in the bloodstream

Potassium levels rise, which can stop the heart

The bladder can rupture

⚠️ Without treatment, a blocked cat can die within 24–72 hours.

Warning signs to watch for

A blocked cat may:

Strain in the litter box with little or no urine

Cry, yowl, or act distressed when trying to pee

Lick the genital area excessively

Hide, act lethargic, or stop eating

Vomit

Have a hard, painful belly

Sit in the litter box for long periods

❗If a cat is going in and out of the litter box and not peeing—that’s an emergency.

How do vets treat a blocked cat?

Treatment usually includes:

Emergency catheter placement to unblock the urethra

IV fluids to flush toxins and protect the kidneys

Pain medication

Muscle relaxers to help urine flow

Hospitalization (often 1–3 days)

In repeat cases, some cats may need:

Prescription urinary diets

Long-term medications

Surgery (perineal urethrostomy, or PU surgery)

Can it happen again?

Yes—re-blocking is common, especially in the first few weeks after treatment. That’s why:

Special urinary diets

Stress reduction

Plenty of water intake
are critical going forward.

What should you do RIGHT NOW?

If you think a cat is blocked:

Do not wait

Do not try home remedies

Go to an emergency vet immediately
