The talk is given by Armand Marzada, a consultant orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery.
The talk covers three main topics: history of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) design, components of TKA, and mechanical alignment and balancing of TKA.
The knee was initially thought to be a simple hinge, but later studies showed it to have more complex biomechanics.
The anatomical alignment method of TKA design was found to have catastrophic results.
Variable radius implants have been developed to reduce contact stresses and linear wear on polyethylene in TKA.
