Honey Hunters of the Blue Mountains (2005) is a documentary film by Last Forest on the Kurumba honey hunters. Indigenous communities in the Nilgiris, South India's 'Blue Mountains', have age-old traditions of collecting wild honey from their forests' steep cliffs and tall trees for generations. With footage from the late 90's and early 00's, this short documentary showcases the story of one Kurumba honey hunter and his process of honey collection. This documentary is meant to honor the Kurumba 'honey hunting' as a sacred, sustainable, forest-caretaking traditional livelihood -- and to highlight the pressures threatening ability of the eco-community to continue their tradition.

Last Forest has been a partner with Indigenous honey hunting communities in the Nilgiris since 1995 as a market facilitator for wild forest produce such as wild Apis dorsata (Giant Asian Rock Bee) honey in the region, along with our partner cooperative Aadhimalai.

In committing to create a fair and producer-first market for this honey, Last Forest works to ensure that it is viable for the Kurumba (and other Nilgiri forest communities) to continue their traditional work and be stewards of the forest -- despite market or climate changes.
