Cyclone Nivar Approaching Landfall in Tamil Nadu Near Chennai

Cyclone Nivar has intensified into a Category 1 cyclone with winds of 130km/h and a central pressure of 982mb. Nivar is forecast to bring 145km/h winds at landfall, rainfall up to 500 millimetres, and life-threatening storm surge. This could lead to property damage and life-threatening flash flooding as the cyclone moves inland and weakens during the next several days.

Stay tuned to the IMD as more updates come out and please stay safe. Landfall is currently expected in India near Chennai within the province of Tamil Nadu in a few hours, and all preparations should be complete at this time as life-threatening conditions will be beginning imminently if they haven’t already.
