The Storm and The Still
By Jennifer Shiloh
You came like thunder through an open door,
Wild eyes, lightning in your voice,
You shook the ground beneath my feet,
Taught my heart how to make noise.
You were fire I couldn’t tame,
A sky that never stood still,
Every breath was a breaking wave,
Every touch — a test of will.
You didn’t come to keep me safe,
You came to wake my soul,
To tear the dark wide open
And remind me I was whole.
I loved the storm for how it moved me,
How it carved my name in the sky,
I loved the way it cracked me open
And taught me how to cry.
And I love the calm for how it holds me,
How it lets my heart lie still,
I don’t choose between the thunder
And the quiet —
I love them both,
The storm and the still.
Then came the quiet like a steady hand,
Soft light through a windowpane,
No rush, no fire burning out,
Just shelter from the rain.
You speak in warmth, not sparks,
In patience, not surprise,
You build a home inside my chest
Where my tired heart can lie.
You didn’t come to change my past,
Or rewrite what’s been real,
You came to stand beside the wreckage
And help the pieces heal.
I loved the storm for how it moved me,
How it taught me how to feel,
I loved the way it loved me loud,
Untamed, raw, and real.
And I love the calm for how it stays,
For the peace it lets me feel,
I don’t love one more than the other —
I love them both,
The storm and the still.
One was chaos, one was grace,
One was motion, one was space,
One taught me how to burn alive,
One taught me how to breathe again.
I wouldn’t change a single scar,
Or wish one soul away,
They shaped two different parts of me
In two completely sacred ways.
The storm lives in my memory,
In the echo of my chest,
The calm lives in my every day,
In the way I finally rest.
I loved the storm for its devotion,
For the way it shook my soul,
I love the calm for how it loves me
Without needing control.
Neither wrong and neither better,
Neither less, neither more —
One was the sea that taught me depth,
One is the shore.
So let the thunder live in me,
Let the quiet keep me whole,
I carry both with open hands —
The beautiful storm,
And the calm that feels like home.
