Growing up, my twin sister and I had the exact same hairstyle: one-length and crazy long. To her, hair has always been a big deal. But I’ve never had any kind of strong feelings about my hair. Even though we’re twins, we rarely dressed similarly when we were younger. My mother wasn’t one of those people who dolled her twins up in matching outfits on the daily. We wore what we liked. May fawned over frilly dresses while I felt more comfortable in trousers and white tees. Somehow my hair never quite fit my style — much less my personality.

Then one day my modeling agent told me that I landed the McQueen campaign, under one condition: I had to buzz my head. I didn’t even think twice about going for it. My only thought was, ‘Damn, I’m going to be cold.’ May was absolutely horrified and told me not to, but I was like, ‘let’s do it!’ My older sister disagreed with May. She thought I would look fantastic and encouraged me to. So I took her advice and went for it.

The very next day, Paul Hanlon (the stylist tasked with my transformation) started buzzing away as I watched in the mirror. His razor sliced through my strands. I blinked and before I knew it, it was all gone. I felt lighter, freer. It was more emotional for my agent, who was in a panic and cried at every strand that fell to the floor. Society thinks long hair equates WITH ‘pretty,’ but I never really had an attachment to mine — I’ve always considered hair more of a nuisance than something that I liked to have and, you know, do things with. Since I have always perceived myself as more masculine, this look makes me feel like myself. My confidence has way gone up. I’ve even gotten the hang of using a razor; I shave the tufts of fuzz that crop up every few weeks with my dad’s and pray that I don’t mess up somehow. If I have a bad hair day, all I have to do is consult with my razor.

I especially love staying with my twin. May always has to wake up hours earlier than me to shower and style her hair. Wash, condition, blow dry — that stuff. Me? I just roll out of bed and I’m ready. I save her tons of time. It’s easy when you have no hair.

Modeling success aside, I feel like I finally look the way I’ve always wanted to. Plus, my shower takes less than two minutes. And I save a lot of money on shampoo!
