Split is one of the most popular places to visit in Croatia for a few reasons: it features a beautiful harbor, the history and architecture of its Middle Ages Venetian and Ancient Roman influence, and its nightlife. We'll visit 15th century People's Square, with its Venetian-style palaces, Old City Hall, and an unusual clock with 24 Roman numerals. We then see Peristyle or Emperor's Square where Roman Emperor Diocletian (284-305 A.D.) would stand on his balcony as his subjects bowed down to him. We go inside ornate St. Domnius Cathedral, where Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum was originally built, and you'll also see its distinctive 187-foot-tall bell tower. After that, we go underneath the cathedral to visit the Crypt of St. Lucy, the Patron Saint of Blindness, and above ground to visit the former Temple of Jupiter which was converted to the Baptistery of St. John in the sixth century. After that, we go deeper into Diocletian's Palace to visit the quarters, the South Wall, the private chambers of Diocletian and his family, the Northwest Tower, the Northern Gate, and a 28 foot statue of a 10th century bishop. After experiencing Split in the daytime, we then walk its streets and alleyways in the nighttime.
