MFIs and fintechs with success in growing their loan books tend to be those with innovative products meeting specific requirements of clients. Many generalist MFIs with more traditional micro lending products struggle to grow their loan books, manage their cost base, and/or their NPLs. Institutions doing well have different business models, e.g:
Asset financing, i.e., loans with security over a specific traceable asset; Working capital financing: some control structurally incorporated into the working capital cycle, e.g., Retail Capital providing merchant cash advances to MSMEs; Embedded financing: B2B gaining popularity vs B2C in BNPL; and other types of working capital financing with similar characteristics e.g., invoice discounting, specialist inventory financing, purchase order financing, trade finance etc. This session, organised by Verdant Capital, presentsexamples of each of these models and examine the challenges and opportunities of each.
