Bei Bei’s New Home: Ya’an

Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, home to more than 30% of the world's pandas which are classed as highly endangered, covers 924,500 ha with seven nature reserves and nine scenic parks in the Qionglai and Jiajin Mountains. 

Bifengxia Panda Base in Ya'an of the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center, which is the core area of the giant panda habitat.The habitat of wild pandas in Ya'an is the best in China on the first level. The number of wild pandas in Ya’an is the largest. In 2006, the Sichuan Giant Panda Habitat was successfully declared as a World Natural Heritage Site, and Ya'an is its core area. 

The Bifengxia base covers an area of 1074 acres, and each panda’s enclosure is more than 1,000 square meters. There are mountains and pools in the enclosure to restore the panda’s wild living environment as much as possible.

The nannies help cubs defecate by patting the perineum and stimulating him to defecate, as mother pandas do. This is what learned from mother pandas.Usually, keepers would do defecate with cubs three times a day, and keepers can tell if the pandas are healthy or not by checking the dung.

In 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake caused severe damage to the Wolong Giant Panda Base. Liu was in the team for rescuing the giant pandas. The staff took the risk of aftershocks and landslides and moved the pandas to a safe place. 

Most of the keepers were left scars, Liu was no exception. In the earthquake, of the 63 giant pandas in Wolong Base, one died, one was missing, and the other 61 were moved to Bifengxia. The giant pandas spent the days of post-disaster reconstruction safely at Bifengxia, where became the new home for them.
