Old House and a Helpless Old Lady
This sensational story was published in a newspaper in England: A lady had an only child named Mary. She had no other children. When Mary came of age, her mother got her married to an affluent man with a high social status and started living with them.

They became parents of an adorable girl who was named Elizabeth. It was as though the grand-mother had found a toy and they both became really close to each other. As time kept flying and Elizabeth grew older, the grandmother was also nearing old age.

The little Elizabeth could now change her own clothes without help. Mary thought that her mother had now grown old. She didn’t quite fit in when guests came. So, Mary decided to admit her mother into an old house i.e. an elderly care home. Her mother pleaded, protested, tried to convey her importance in the house and that the little Elizabeth needed her but Mary was adamant that it would not affect their relationship. Little Elizabeth who had gotten really close to her grandmother, was also in favor of her staying, but to no avail.

Finally, Mary convinced her mother by proposing that they would bring her back on the weekends. Hence, she admitted her mother into the old house. Mary abided by her word for some time but gradually, waiting became the old lady’s fate. The lady would write long letters reminding Mary of their loving memories. She would write compassionate things for the little Elizabeth, but soon, they stopped responding to the letters as well. Then one day, Mary wrote a letter to her mother promising that she would take her home one night before Christmas.

Therefore, the elderly mother started waiting anxiously for that day. She carefully and painstakingly knitted a wool sweater for her granddaughter, Elizabeth and with great excitement, sat in the balcony on the night before Christmas with her loving gift. It was a snowy night with freezing cold weather. However, she stayed on the lookout for approaching cars waiting to see when her daughter, Mary would arrive and take her home.

The weather became extremely cold. Seeing all this, a nurse at the old house, Nancy couldn’t help but pity her. She kept urging her to come back to the room with the heater, brought her a warm blanket, gave her tea and kept insisting to go inside the room but the old mother was waiting for her daughter and grand-daughter. In that cold night, she kept looking at cars one after another waiting for her daughter, but Mary wasn’t supposed to come and she didn’t.

Finally, she spent the whole night shivering in cold and due to the extreme cold, she was struck by a severe case of pneumonia. Her condition worsened and her health deteriorated and one day, she died due to the same illness. After a few days, her daughter Mary came to the old house to collect her mother’s belongings. Nancy shared the whole incident with her. So, Mary tempted her by offering a handsome salary to come and work at her house as a maid. Nancy taunted her by saying, “I will definitely come to your house, but not now. I will come when your daughter Elizabeth leaves you at the old house. I will go with her to serve her as a maid.” There is a lesson in this story. Take care of your elderly parents.

Consider their service an honor. Admitting parents into old houses has become a tradition in non-Muslim societies, but it is immensely tragic that, today, Muslims are also adopting this trend following non-Muslims.

They also send their parents to old houses; the same parents who, in freezing cold nights and in starvation, took care of their children without giving a thought to their illnesses and sufferings. And now, when they are in need of assistance from their children, the children simply don’t have time for them. The Beloved and Blessed Prophet صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم has declared parents, their children’s Heaven or Hell; if he serves them, they are his Paradise and if he disobeys them, they are his Hell.
