On Day 9 of my walk from Paris to Bordeaux I took a 20km detour to walk into Illiers-Combray, the village that Marcel Proust made famous. He spent his childhood summer vacations here with his beloved aunt. For close readers of ‘In Search of Lost Time’ you will recognize scenes around the village that Proust described in the first 200 pages of his famous novel. The village has done a great job of commemorating its favourite son and Proust’s locales remain unspoiled. It is well worth the journey!
