Salem Witch-Hunt Daily Report May 23 2024

On May 23, 1692, magistrates examined Sarah Bassett, Elizabeth Carey, and perhaps Susanna Roots. Unfortunately, no copy of Roots' examination survives. Magistrates re-examined Mary Esty. Nathaniel Ingersoll and Thomas Raymond filed complaints against Benjamin Proctor, Mary DeRich, and Sarah Pease. The three newest suspects, Proctor, DeRich, and Pease were arrested, questioned, and detained.

The court ordered Mary Esty, Abigail Soames, Susanna Roots, Sarah Bassett, Mary DeRich, Benjamin Proctor, and Elizabeth Carey to be transferred to Boston Jail. Elizabeth Booth was allegedly afflicted by Mary DeRich and John, Elizabeth, and Sarah Proctor. Susanna Sheldon made a statement against Daniel Andrew, Sarah Proctor, George Jacobs Jr., and Philip English.

Samuel Abbey was deposed against Mary Esty, John Willard, and Mary Whittredge. Sarah Trask testified against Mary Esty, John Willard, and Mary Whittredge. Mary Walcott was deposed against Mary Esty. Abigail Williams and Ann Putnam Jr. were deposed against Mary Esty, John Willard, and Mary Whittredge.

Ann Putnam Jr. testified against Mary Esty. Abigail Williams testified against Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. John Richards and Joseph Morgan were deposed against Dorcas Hoar. Elizabeth Booth was deposed against Sarah Proctor, Mary Derich, Elizabeth Proctor, and John Proctor. David Ferneaux, Jonathan Walcott Jr., Thomas Putnam, and Mary Walcott were deposed against Sarah Proctor. John Putnam Jr. testified against Sarah Proctor. Andrew Elliott made a statement against Susanna Roots. Thomas Gage was deposed against Roger Toothaker. Elias Pickworth testified against Roger Toothaker. And John Hathorne wrote out a census of prisoners with the dates when they were transferred to various jails.
