On Thursday Donald Trump revoked a scientific finding that long has been the central basis for U.S. action to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change, the most aggressive move by the president to roll back climate regulations.

Since 2009, the finding, which was based on a report from the Barack Obama-era EPA, has provided guidance to the federal government on how to reduce emissions to address the climate change problems and attempt to lessen the effects of heat waves, wildfires, droughts and floods. The findings also show that 20% of the heat-trapping gases are emitted in the U.S. from exhaust ports on both cars and trucks.

The finding provides a legal and scientific underpinning for the federal government to regulate greenhouse gases, such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane, and the amounts that enter the Earth's atmosphere. Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, called the move "the largest act of deregulation in the history of the United States."
